Life and Times – 4/15/11

So I still haven’t decided who I should share this blog with.  Currently, only a select few know of its existence, but if you are reading this, you may have been filled in by now, or you are a member of the select few, or you’ll never really know which group you belong too.  I am Jacob, this is my island.

Things have been extremely hectic, to put it mildly.  At work, I’m coming up on the 1 year mark out of public accounting, and it’s great, sort of.  My feelings towards my current work situation is very much a roller coaster, with exhilarating highs and gut wrenching lows.  The next few months might lead to some epic changes at work (all positive though). I’m going to have stay mum on any further details though.

At home, my daughter is an incredible handful, more like 4 handfuls.  My wife and I are on the Heinz team now, constantly playing catchup (my corniness penetrates all mediums).  It’s exhausting to have a 9 month old, but nonetheless, intoxicating.  We are always on the run with something going on: eating, cleaning, bathing, teething, pooping, peeing, burping, puking, anti-ear infecting, and that’s just my list, my daughter’s is twice as long!  An interesting line from an article I read on Slate by ShankarVedantam comes to mind:

We have a name for people who pursue rare moments of bliss at the expense of their wallets and their social and professional relationships: addicts.

Parenting is to be an addict and my heroin is my daughter’s smile (did you catch that).   I’m new to the parenting game, so I can’t imagine how much crazier it gets as the you go deeper into the rabbit hole.  I melt when I see that little pumpkin smile.  She’s been progressing rapidly (like any proud parent believes).  The over/under on when she will be walking is 3.5 weeks.  Bets are coming in from all corners of the family tree.  I think she has the acting bug.  She starts on these long-winded soliloquies (nothing intelligible of course) and flings her arms up and over to add emphasize to each BaBa!   She’s a rambling wo-man!  Additionally, I’m slowly indoctrinating her to like only my sports teams, we will further the brainwash this Sunday with the Knicks first playoff game!  Exciting times!

Happy Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia (and extended tax day),

Dan
